Early this morning, scientists at CERN made their official announcement that they’re “99% sure” they’ve found the Higgs boson, also known as The God Particle — the particle responsible for giving matter its mass.
5 sigma is the usual particle physics threshold for discovery. It roughly means that you’re 99.9999% sure

In simple language, CMS have discovered a new boson, and it behaves like the Standard Model Higgs

According to particle physicist Konstantin Toms, ”It means the Standard Model of particle physics is true and complete and we have discovered the last missing piece.”
Peter Higgs wept with joy at the announcement, saying, ”I never expected this to happen in my lifetime and shall ask my family to put some champagne in the fridge.”
Being that this is arguably one of the biggest moments in physics history, many observers felt that the occasion called for something better than the decision to use Comic Sans and bad clip art on the official announcement presentation.
