The impact and importance of Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece Alien on the sci-fi/horror landscape cannot be overstated. Look at the divisive reaction his kinda-sorta-but-not-really prequel, Prometheus, is eliciting in viewers; Alien still means something to people over 30 years later.

In the years following its release, it also meant a great concept for B-movie producers to rip off. Roger Corman’s New World Pictures made a slew of low-budget knock-offs but none were as ridiculous or as blatant as 1982’s Forbidden World, a movie that brazenly tries to strike fear in its audience via the liberal use of Vaseline and rubber puppets.

Having seen The Avengers not once but twice and thinking it supremely fantastic entertainment, I return to my 8 year-old self to discuss the rest of the big summer blockbusters.

    NOW: Hey, buddy.
    THEN: Oh, hi.
    NOW: What’s the matter?
THEN: The wooden time machine idea was a complete wash.
NOW: Ah, yeah, sorry about that.
THEN: I can’t believe Dad wouldn’t let me build a car out of lumber.
NOW: Well, you’d have probably gotten splinters.
THEN: And he really didn’t want me touching the electrical outlets. He’s so mean sometimes.
NOW: Well, you won’t have to worry about him too much longer.
    THEN: What?
NOW: Nevermind. HEY! I saw The Avengers like we talked about. Twice even. You’d really like it.
THEN: Eh, maybe. Aren’t there any other cool movies?
NOW: Sure there are. But, don’t you want to talk about Captain America and Hulk and—
    THEN: No.

These new promotional videos for Ridley Scott’s new Alien prequel Prometheus seek to further flesh out the universe in which the film is set.

Looking beyond the fact that the marketing crew involved insists on using the word “viral” as a noun in the video’s title, I actually really enjoy having supplemental media to watch before the movie hits theaters.

I’ve seen Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece Blade Runner probably 10 times and it took me a fair few viewings before I could even attempt to explain what the movie was about. That may have been some of the problem it had when it was released; it was gorgeous to look at but it is emotionally distant.  Upon recently watching the film again, amid the gawking at how gorgeous it is every time I see it, it finally hit me what the film is ultimately about: humanity. Duh, right? A movie about robots wanting to extend their life is about humanity? You don’t say! But it’s deeper than that. I always thought that the replicants, specifically Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty, were far and away the most interesting characters, and Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard, the titular “Blade Runner” was pretty boring and unlikeable. But that, my dear friends, is the point. It’s taken me ten viewings to realize, Deckard is boring because he doesn’t know what it means to be human. He also might be the least heroic hero in science fiction.
