After 20 long years of waiting, one of the greatest sitcoms in television history is finally coming to DVD. Get a Life, starring Chris Elliott ran for only two seasons from 1990-1992, but it was way ahead of its time. Long before South Park was killing Kenny in every episode, Get a Life killed and resurrected Chris on numerous occasions.
If you’ve never seen or even heard of Get a Life, know that the show’s influence on the cultural landscape runs deep. Perhaps you’ve heard of Dan The Automator and Prince Paul’s collaborative effort Handsome Boy Modeling School. They did the song “Holy Calamity” that you probably heard on Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 or on the soundtrack for Slackers.
Familiar yet? Good. Well where do you think they came up with the name Handsome Boy Modeling School? Look no further than Get a Life, Season 1, Episode 2 “The Prettiest Week of My Life.”
Now how about Roger the goo-spewing alien from Seth McFarlane’s American Dad? It may come as a surprise, but Roger is an homage to Spewey, from Season 2, Episode 11 “Spewey and Me.”
Finally, what about that theme song? You may not hear R.E.M.’s “Stand” played on the radio much anymore, but did you know that “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction is little more than a retooled version of the same song? Maybe if you hear both songs played at the same time you’ll hear it.
The complete 2 season Unspecial Non-Anniversary Edition DVD set releases on September 18th, but you can preorder your copy on Amazon now!
